Advanced Wallet Security

Regular keys explained.

A regular key lets an XRPL account authorize a different key pair to sign transactions. This is useful for separating the master key from daily wallet activity.

Step through the regular key flow visually.

Why Use One?

To keep the master key offline while another authorized key handles routine signing.

What It Is Not

A regular key is not a spending limit. If authorized, it can sign account transactions.

Regular Key Mental Model

Master KeyThe original authority of the account. Treat it like the root key.
Regular KeyA separate key authorized to sign transactions for the account.
Operational BenefitThe master key can remain offline and be used less often.
Main RiskIf the regular key is compromised, it may be able to sign harmful transactions.
Master Disable RiskIf the master key is disabled and all other signing methods are lost, recovery may be impossible.

Beginner-Friendly Rule

Do not rush master-key disabling.

Adding a regular key is a powerful learning step. Disabling the master key is a separate advanced action. Test everything with a small wallet first.
